New York Politics and Real Estate:
An Inside View

Featuring Charlie Bagli,
a longtime metro area reporter for the New York Times

In more than 20 years of reporting, Charlie covered the intersection of politics and real estate in the New York metropolitan area. He wrote about the sale of high-profile buildings including Donald Trump’s projects in Manhattan and Atlantic City. As an investigative reporter, he uncovered political contributions, bid rigging, and payoffs. Charlie will discuss stories he covered during his career at the Times and talk with us about how he came to be a reporter.

Charlie’s numerous feature stories have appeared in print and broadcast outlets, including the Emmy Award winning series, “The Jinx,” which investigated quirky real estate scion Robert Durst. He is the author of Other People's Money: Inside the Housing Crisis and the Demise of the Greatest Real Estate Deal Ever Made, which examined the collapse of the much-publicized acquisition and subsequent loss of Manhattan's Stuyvesant Town–Peter Cooper Village. Since retiring from the Times in 2018, Charlie works as a freelancer for Los Angeles Magazine, Town & Country and Crimestory.com as well as the Times.
