Taking Space: Contemporary Women Artists and the Politics of Scale

Join us at the Montclair Art Museum for a docent-led tour of MAM’s newest exhibition, Taking Space: Contemporary Women Artists and the Politics of Scale.  This show invites viewers to consider how space, size, scale and repetition can be interpreted as political gestures in the practices of many women artists.  The works you will see reveal the varied approaches of women artists for whom space is a critical feature of their work, whether they occupy significant space on walls or engage three-dimensionally with gallery spaces through sculpture and installation.

Following this informative one-hour tour, the museum’s Education team will be available at MAM’s Cornerstone Café from 2-3 pm for conversation about the museum’s program offerings for lifelong learners and the issues facing Montclair’s diverse aging community.

Refreshments will be available for purchase. You are also invited to explore other galleries, which remain open until 6 pm.

This program is free but RSVPs are required.  Call or email:

February Saturday Social - AIM Celebrates Black History Month: A Conversation with George Shirley

AIM CELEBRATES
BLACK HISTORY MONTH:
A CONVERSATION WITH GEORGE SHIRLEY

AIM’s February Saturday Social will feature legendary tenor and former Montclair resident George Shirley. During a career that spans more than 60 years, Mr. Shirley has won national and international acclaim as a performer, teacher and lecturer. As a teacher, he was the first African American hired as a high school music teacher in his native Detroit. He continued to break down barriers as the first African American member of the US Army Chorus and the first African American tenor to perform a leading role at the Metropolitan Opera, where he was a soloist for eleven years. In appearances around the world, he has performed more than 80 operatic roles as well as oratorio, recital and concert literature and worked with some of the world’s most renowned conductors.

Mr. Shirley will be interviewed about his long and illustrious career by Montclair resident Patrizia Cioffi, a soprano soloist and voice teacher. Mr. Shirley and Ms. Cioffi have known each other for many years. She studied with him early in her career; after she founded the New School for the Arts/NJ Opera Institute, he served for many years as its Artistic Director.

AIM Explores Senior Living Options

Aging in Montclair (AIM) invites the community to an informative talk on senior living choices featuring Marc Friedlander, Certified Senior Advisor (CSA).  The program is part of AIM’s monthly Saturday Social series and will be presented via Zoom on Saturday, April 24 at 2:00.  Following Mr. Friedlander’s talk, he will answer questions from audience members.

Roughly 44 million Americans provide unpaid informal care each year to the older US population. Particularly as baby boomers age, families may be faced with the emotional decision of moving a parent, spouse, or other family member into a different living environment. Making such decisions can be overwhelming and difficult.  When is the right time to move? Where should the person move to? What if other family members cannot agree to the move?  Such issues can complicate the decision-making process.

Marc Friedlander has both personal and professional experience in helping families navigate the complexities of senior living choices. In his presentation, Marc will look at the characteristics of Senior Living Communities and the benefits they can provide. Audience members will learn the differences among Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Nursing Care, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRDs).  He will also discuss current COVID-19 conditions and their impact on Senior Living Communities.

Marc has an undergraduate degree in psychology from George Washington University and an MBA from Montclair State University.  The son of AIM member Eve Friedlander, Marc lives in the beautiful Richmond, Virginia area with his wife and two children.

We hope you will join us! Please click the button below to register, and you will receive the zoom link via email.

Medical Marijuana - Webinar with Dr. Mary Clifton

Aging in Montclair invites the community to an informative talk on Medical Marijuana featuring Mary Clifton, MD on Sunday, March 14. This program will take place via Zoom beginning at 4 pm. Following Dr. Clifton’s presentation, she will answer questions from audience members.

The passage in November of a constitutional amendment to legalize marijuana in New Jersey and the recent legislative approval of bills regulating the sale of cannabis in the state make this a most timely topic for discussion. Seniors are the demographic whose marijuana use is increasing more than any other age group. The same baby boomers who might have experimented with marijuana for recreation when they were younger are now turning to cannabis for medical help or to treat pain or chemotherapy side effects.

To attend this program, email AIM at aginginmontclairaim@gmail.com for the zoom link. You can also use this email address to submit questions in advance for Dr. Clifton.

POLITICS AND THE PANDEMIC: WHAT DO THEY MEAN FOR NJ'S FUTURE?

As the elections get closer and closer, you may be asking many questions.

  • What are the key races for NJ and how do they relate to the national race?

  • What is the back story to the ballot question on the legalization of marijuana?

  • What is the latest update on Covid-19 for NJ?

  • Is NJ media thriving?

Those questions and others will be discussed by

John Mooney, Executive Director and  Founder of NJ Spotlight News

Join Aging In Montclair for a live, virtual conversation with John Mooney at our October Saturday Program when he reflects on his distinguished career as a reporter for The Newark Star-Ledger and The Bergen Record, and a contributing writer for The New York Times before founding NJ Spotlight in 2009, an online news service. In March 2019, WNET Public Television acquired NJ Spotlight to partner with NJTV News, WNET’s public television affiliate based in Newark.

This acquisition provided NJTV News with an “expanded digital platform and journalism team, while providing NJ Spotlight more stability and reporting resources as part of the WNET family.”  The union of these two news sources was the creation of NJ Spotlight News, dedicated to covering the critical issues of education, healthcare, environment and politics.

Before founding  NJ Spotlight in 2009,  an online news site, John Mooney covered education in New Jersey for 15 years as a reporter for The Newark Star-Ledger and The Bergen Record, and a contributing writer for The New York Times.

He has won numerous state and national awards, including honors from the Education Writers Association and the American Society of News Editors.
